positive affirmations: why + how


Have you ever heard the phrase “your thoughts create your reality”? It may sound a little crazy, hippy-dippy, or totally false but I am here to tell you it’s true.

What we choose to focus our energy on, we attract more of in our lives. If we want good things for our lives we have to align our thinking accordingly. Easier said than done,  but it is easy to begin! And, of course, practice makes perfect. That’s where positive affirmations really come in handy!

What exactly is a positive affirmation?
Positive affirmations are simple, concise, and powerful truth phrases that one desires to “absorb” into their life. They work best when said aloud, but are also powerful in written form. 

I’ll admit, when I first started studying mental health, mindfulness, and the law of attraction the idea of saying a positive affirmation out loud to myself seemed like the silliest, most pointless waste of time to me. “How will that really help me?” I asked myself. 

What did I really have to lose by trying though? At the time, I was driving at least ten hours a week back and forth from Charlotte, NC. I felt horribly awkward at first, but as I continued to repeat some affirmations to myself, it felt kind of good and I started believing what I was saying. I quickly made it a ritual and before I knew it, I was happier than I had been in a long time. My anxiety had been greatly reduced and I was so grateful for the life I was living. That’s not to say I don’t still experience anxiety or depression from time-to-time. This isn’t a cure-all for mental health issues, but it is certainly a step in the right direction.

Changing my mindset was a game-changer for me. Though it may sound silly and minor, affirmations can make some major change in your life. Imagine my delight when I saw the daily affirmation space in my new planner!

What should I say?
Well, that depends! For me, personally, I like to affirm positive statements about myself and my life. The first affirmation I ever said aloud was “I am enough.” Simple, but so powerful. This is a great list that encompasses many different categories.

  • I am strong, beautiful, and confident
  • I believe in myself and my ability to succeed
  • I am becoming the best version of myself

  • I am focused and persistent in the pursuit of my goals
  • I have everything I need to be successful
  • I trust my intuition
  • My productivity does not define my worth
